I played Saturday night at the Elks club in Plymouth with the “Swing City Big Band”. I subbed for my good friend Rim Kasputis on the solo / jazz chair in the trumpet section. The crowd loved it and we had a good time playing.
Last night (Sunday), I subbed in the II-V-I orchestra at “The Creekside Bar & Grill” in Ann Arbor. We only had 2 trumpets and 1 trombone with a full sax and rhythm sections. It was a fun night. David Swain, the founder and leader of II-V-I features special music each month. Several months ago it was Thad Jones music. Last month (which I also played in) the special was Count Basie doing Beatles tunes. Last night is was the music of Fletcher Henderson, a composer and arranger from the mid 1930’s. The music was fun to play yet demanding. I enjoyed playing that style of music and the crowd really loved it which surprised me since it is not so commonly heard.
David Swain and his II-V-I orchestra plays at Creekside (Jackson Rd. just west of Zeeb off I94) the last Sunday evening each month from 6:30p to 9:00p. Features the great vocalist Jim Paravantes. Go check it out.
